Discover how a special branch of mathematics called topology helps robots find their way around obstacles. Through a poster and interactive problem-solving activities, visitors will explore how these mathematical ideas are used in modern robotics.
In this project, we investigate the motion of a simple two-joint robot arm. Although the robot is described by only two numbers, the collection of all its possible positions forms a shape known as a torus (a donut). When obstacles are added, the topology of this space changes, creating fundamentally different types of paths that the robot can follow. These ideas form the basis of topological motion planning, which is used in real-world robotics, from industrial robot arms to underwater robots. Through a poster and interactive problem-solving activities, visitors will discover how these mathematical ideas help robots find safe paths around obstacles.
