Rathaus Kiel
Look-out Point of Interest Town Hall

For more than 100 years, Kiel's town hall has shaped the image of the city.

After four years of construction, Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurates Kiel's town hall, designed by Hermann Billing, on November 12, 1911. Its 106 meter high tower is reminiscent of Venice's Campanile - a concession to Wilhelm's taste. During World War II, Allied bomber pilots spare the town hall tower to use it as a "bearing point" for their further air raids. Bullet holes and splinter marks are preserved in the Town Hall facade. From the town hall balcony, the Kiel Week is opened - or sometimes a THW championship is celebrated.
