The opera house stands next to the town hall in the heart of the state capital Kiel.
The building was heavily destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in the early fifties. The interior decoration in the style of the "new modern age" of that time is listed as a historical monument.
The brick-red Art Nouveau building has a computer-controlled lower and upper machinery and a revolving stage with versatile playing possibilities and state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology.
The Kiel Opera House offers space for over 800 spectators and is popular for its wide-ranging programme, from baroque opera to canon works of music theatre, musicals and operettas, as well as for the ballet performances of its own company. Side venues such as the Foyers or the Klaiber Studio are popular for more experimental music theatre productions as well as chamber concerts.
