Die Pumpe - Culture and Communication Centre for Kiel since 1979
The pump - originally a pumping station for the disposal of Kiel wastewater into the fjord and part of a wastewater concept for the city of Kiel developed in 1922 - was erected in 1929 in the heart of Kiel's old town.
The pump suffered heavy damage during the war, but it never completely stopped operating. When the new pumping station was put into operation around 1973 at the corner of Hassstrasse/Jensendamm, the "old pump" had had its day and the building fell into a slumber until it was revived in 1979: Two upper floors were moved into the spacious hall and work, event, cinema, gastronomy, disco, bar and office rooms were created on now more than 2,000 square metres of floor space. The mighty pump wheel (pump no. 2, from a former total of 4 pumps) on the ground floor was left standing, for decorative purposes it can even turn.
