The theme of this year's Weeks for Art and Discourse was developed against the backdrop of current social and cultural transformations in our globally connected world. The focus is on the questions of what consequences political upheavals and social caesuras can have on the dynamics between the individual, community, and society. The starting point is the curatorial concept, which is based on the sociological observation that even weak social ties open up new resources and perspectives for the individual and thus contribute to the stability and diversity of communities. The group exhibition of the same name, "The Power of Weak Ties," offers an artistic approach to this discussion. Six young artists from Germany and Switzerland explore the complex aspects of interpersonal relationships in their work through various media, visual means, and narrative strategies. Franca Behrmann, Alime Ertürk, Laura Nan, Max Prange, Aura Roig, and Xiaoyi Zhang bring personal perspectives to this interplay between ideals and reality.
The works on display, however, do not limit themselves to personal concerns, but rather open up a deeper understanding of collective processes and social contexts. They provide a stimulus and demonstrate that fragility can generate the resilient force necessary to deal with social challenges. From family archives in Alime Ertürk's work to the collective scream in Xiaoyi Zhang's paintings, the works explore in various ways how ruptures can create new connections. These approaches also run through Franca Behrmann's exploration of her family history, Laura Nan's endless sleepover, Max Prange's voices of loneliness, and Aura Roig's pictorial concepts of radical tenderness. The exhibition invites us not to fear these tensions, but to see them as nuclei and resources for the community.
