Ahoi and welcome aboard the Kiek ut - fresh enjoyment in a dream location!
The steamer bridge was built in 1903/1904. From here, the children of Kiel's villa suburbs set off to their schools every day and their parents to their workplaces on the other side of the fjord.
The bridge was used until 1998, when it was unfortunately damaged by a steamer, from which it never recovered and has been without any real purpose ever since. To prevent the bridge from finally falling into disrepair and to keep it accessible for residents and tourists, an association of committed citizens took over the bridge in 2006 and has been maintaining the landmark with donations ever since.
Anyone who has experienced the sunset here on the bridge one summer evening, perhaps with a glass of wine in their hand, can confirm what a good idea this was.
The little house on the beach was built in 1950 in what is known as "steamer architecture". Originally a bus shelter with ticket sales, it later became a kiosk, small bistro or ambitious beach restaurant. The operators came and went, and from 2008 the place was deserted. The municipality, as the owner, lacked the money for structural maintenance and a financially strong tenant for the necessary renovation could not be found. So the aforementioned Kitzeberger Dampferbrücke e.V. association took matters into its own hands again. Once again, donations were collected from the people of Heikendorf to put the Kiek ut in a viable condition.
The new Kiek ut opened its doors in summer 2015. It is more than just a simple snack bar on the beach - it combines charm, passion and commitment with Holstein cuisine and a Mediterranean touch.
The terrace with the fantastic view of the fjord is an insider tip with a paved terrace, parasols, wind protection and seating directly on the beach. The indoor area also offers the best view with its long window fronts.
In winter when it rains and storms, the fireplace invites you to enjoy a cosy lunch, coffee and cake or dinner with the family......
