Flandernbunker
The association "Mahnmal Kilian" e.V. would like to preserve the Flanders bunker, which presents itself as a compact, defiant grey concrete cube, as an authentic historical monument in public space. Its character as a protective building at the time of the Second World War catches the eye due to the lack of any embellishing ingredient (e.g. brickwork) and the enormous wall thickness of over 2 metres visible at the openings.
The traces of the past 60 years are also clearly visible. Concrete efflorescences not only cover the bunker from the outside, but have also piled up inside to form small stalactites and stalagmites. Condensation and seeping rainwater has absorbed the red-brown oxides of rusting iron reinforcements and distributed them over the walls in the form of vertical flags. This original state should be maintained as far as possible.
The association "Mahnmal Kilian" e.V. has established this war ruin as a place of education and international understanding. It is an educational, cultural and memorial site for visitors and serves as a starting point for vivid history lessons. As a ruin, the bunker documents war madness and defeat at the same time.
